I use a filter remover that I've had fer years, basically the same as the one's you see in cheapo auto marts, except instead of a metal hoop, it's a leather belt, adjustable for the biggest or smallest of filters & works everytime.

 

so many replies...i didnt know there was an art or science to removing the oil filter.

 

K&N oil filters are nice because they have the stud built right into the end. When it's time to change all you need is a ratchet and a socket.

 

A "Rubber Strap" wrench works great. You can use this for anything, including oil filter removal. Cost like $10 bucks at Sears and is a must have tool for any garage.
