I use a filter remover that I've had fer years, basically the same as the one's you see in cheapo auto marts, except instead of a metal hoop, it's a leather belt, adjustable for the biggest or smallest of filters & works everytime.
A "Rubber Strap" wrench works great. You can use this for anything, including oil filter removal. Cost like $10 bucks at Sears and is a must have tool for any garage.
