Looking to do a little painting
Hi all,
I am a first year rider, with my first bike. A 2002 600 f4i.
It is all black with no decals, and has a carbon fiber d&d exhaust.
I want to spice it up with a little red, however I want to keep the fairing and windscreen 100% black as they are currently. I like people not being able to tell the make/cc/year without being pretty knowlegable about bikes
So, I ordered a wheel trim decal kit, and put a dark red decal tape around my rims. The brake pads are also red, so It looks pretty nice.
However I've been wanting to add a little more red.
Im thinking..
Passenger Pegs
Rider pegs
Rider (stomp pad?) not sure what the term for this piece is, but its on the side of the bike directly above the riders foot pegs, where you hold on with your ankles and what not.
I feel like that would give the bike just a subtle, and unique look of red.
I don't want to put to much money into this bike, due to it already being 10 years old and having about 23k miles. I bought it for 3250, and figure I can ride it all summer to about 30k miles and sell it for about the same.
That being said, is there a cheep way to do this painting? I've heard people talk about power coating and such, but I am just a starter when it comes to anything mechanical.
Thoughts/idea's/suggestions/how to's/ and constructive criticism all welcome!

i was in the same boat as you this time last year. same bike as well.
dont try to start off customizing the bike. instead, ride it. learn it. if you havent already, take the MSF course. there may be some mechanical issues you will probably want to fix like the CCT rattle. it's incredibly annoying.
anyway, about misc details, check out motorcyclesuperstore.com
they have a lot of odds n ends stuff like rim tape and pegs.

Now that you mention that rattle, I rode my bike without a helmet for the first time the other week. ( I know i know, but my girlfriend was begging for a ride and I hadn't purchased her a helmet at the time). Anyways, without the helmet on, I noticed a rattle. I thought that It was natural, and I just didn't hear it with the helmet on...is this the so called "CCT rattle" that you are speaking of? If so, how do I fix that ****
On all other accounts, I feel you. I am in the process of getting registered for the MSF class and am really taking my time learning to ride the bike. But on rainy days I would love to be able to still interact with my bike! Im looking to learn everything about bikes, not just how to ride! and some painting and simple customizations would be a nice little hobby to keep me busy IMO!

If you want a cheap way to mess around and not do anything permanent this stuff is the ticket. It won't last like powder coating, it is durable and they have colors. But for temporary & cheap....
Go as big or little as you like!

Thanks man, thats exactly what I was looking for.
How long do you approximate that it will last compared to doing a power coating?

I have ordered mine (blue). Here's a guy who did his pegs and swingarm. Just taped it up good and didn't even take it off. Read the whole thread. Lots of good info. Turned out awesome! We will see on the durability.
Check out these two videos also:
This guy's a douche but you can see the rims and how long they last with no issues
