"Lashing of the valves"????
I was talking to my buddy at work and he was telling me that on his four wheeler he experienced what he said is "lashing of the valves". I never heard of it before but he said it should be adjusted after break-in when everything is pretty much settled in. My 06 1k has 1400mi on it and instead on taking it to the dealership to have the 1st service I just changed the oil/filter myself and ajusted the chain. I figured thats all they do anyway andI saved some dough. Is there something I am forgeting? Should I get my valves checked/adjusted?
You don't lash valves on new bikes. The thing you have to worry about is your valve clearance but not untill you put on a lot more miles or when you have exsesive noise from your valves. Valve lashing is done when new valves are put in a head. You use lashing compound put it on the outside edge where the valve contacts the head. You spin the valve with a lashing tool so the valve and head seat perfctly and don't leak. On new bikes and some 4wheelers you NEVER EVER do this because the valves have a special coating to resist wear and thermal breakdown. You only check the valve clearance between the cam and valve bucket or rocker arm and valve depending on the valve train set up. And if adjustment is needed you replace the shim with the propoer shim Don't listen to your friend. You need to trust your dealership and don't be afraid of asking them questions even if you thing there dumb.
Actually, 1fast is thinking of "Lapping", not "Lashing". Swashbuckler, your friend is referring to "valve lash", a commonterm for valve clearance. And you have nothing to worry about as CBRs don't require valve clearance checks until I believe 32,000 miles - or is it 24,000? Either way, 1400 is a loooooong way from there.
