Did I Get the Wrong Oil Filter?
Hey guys
I have a 2000 CBR F4. Just went over to wally world and picked up some Rotella T6 5W-40 for my next oil change. I grabbed a fram oil filter because it was the only one over there (i know some people on here dont like em). I looked up on the sheet in the store which filter to get, it said for CBR's up to 1998 get a PH6017A but I looked up online that F4's are PH6018 (its a little bit longer and fatter looking). Does anyone know if this will fit or am I going to have to return it for the PH6017A?
Any info helps. Thanks.

That's interesting. I didn't even know Fram recommended their automotive filters for our bikes; Purolator recommends bike-specific filters. I'd at least exchange for the recommended filter, but that's _not_ based on experience with whether the filter you have will fit or not. Personally, I'm ordering the bike-specific Purolators.
According to Fram's spec sheet for each filter, the internal threading on the PH6017A@ is 20mmx1.5mm threaded, the PH6018 is a 20mmx1.0mm thread. All other specs seem very simmilar - the length is a little more on the 6018, and the relief pressure is 12psi on the 6018 vs 13psi on the 6017a.
Fram's online application guide actually doesn't have anything for a F4/F4i. They list F1-3, and the 600rr.
The application guide for the 6018 is for pretty much Suzuki only.
I know that filters for Nissan 3.5l v6's will work on our bikes, so I looked that up on Fram's website - Filter PH6607 - and in the application guide for the 6607 the dimensional specs are almost identical to the 6017A, and more importantly, thier application guide for the 6607 lists the Honda F4/F4i, all years.
So - short answer - yes the 6018 is not the proper filter for you - the threads aren't correct for your bike. Take it back and get a PH6607 or a PH6017A, either of those will work for you.

Seriously though, I just sit at a computer all day for work, and have always been the guy that figured out how to research everything.
That and I have shop manuals for about everything on this forum stored in PDF on my harddrive.
now - the question about the FRAM filter as a brand, that's a different discussion. I won't get into it, but i prefer Wix, Delco or Purolator. What's scary there is that some brands make really good product for a while to win comparison tests, then a few years later change their production methods and materials without mentioning it, make a lower quality product, but their customers keep on buying cause that's what they've always bought.
My parts-store guys still tell me they wouldn't put a Fram filter on their lawnmower though.
I'm a parts store guy by night. I wont put a fram on my enemies weed whacker. That would just be cruel.
I do however sell a billion of them because people think a popular name is the same as a good product.
I have cut the cases on more filters than I care to remember. I like Wix, Mobil/K&N, Purolater etc. Not a fan of the cheap construction on the bypass valves and filter media in Fram.
Any good auto parts store guy worth their crappy pay can take one filter from just about any brand and tell you the filters with the same dimensions that will fit your motorcycle. I can also say that if that filter is something that is in stock at your local parts store, it is used for probably close to 300 different applications.
