Default Clogged vent tube on the gas tank...

Ok, been putting my 2 cents in for a while, now I'm hoping somebody can give me the straight skinny on my problem. Here goes...

The first hot day (90f), out running around, make a stop at a really cool landscaping place, cruise around with the wifey-poo checking out the ponds, koi, statuary, about 45 min later, get ready to head out.

Key in ignition, turn it on, no choke and give it a bump. Starts to turn over, starter stumbles. Let off starter, wait a sec, kick it again. Just cranks, suddenly notice raw gas smell. WTF! Flouded? on a couple of bumps, no way! Look down, I have gas dripping on the ground...from the exaust pipe joint at the header. hm, did I just hydralic lock the cylinder with gas? Open the gas cap, Poof! Very hvy pressure.

My surmise is the vent tube is blocked and when the gas gets warmed in the sun pressure built up and forced a ton of gas into the cylinders. After about 5 min and no choke, pump and hold throttle open, got it to fire up and then ran fine. Took it straight home, parked it and it fired up again fine.

So, if that is the problem, where is the vent opening inside the tank? I figure, I 'll need to drain it, air it out and then blow out the tube in the tank. I would prefer crap to blow OUT of the tank, not in to it.

Is the vent accessable from the inside or do you HAVE to blow from the outlet on the bottom of the tank? If I blow into the tank, I assume, use some kerosene (as a low-ignition solvent) to rinse the tank out? Then just keep an eye on the fuel filter for awhile?

Thanks, in advance, for the lowdown.
Ern

I had a problem like that, but the hose was kinked. I then took the hose off. Problem solved.

I'm not entirely sure of the problem, but it doesn't seem too serious. I think your plan of action is going to solve it, and if not, just open the cap before you ride.

Doh! 98 CBRF3 I know it's not a kinked hose, Bike didn't have any vent or water drain hoses when I got it. I just put them on and was careful about routing them. I'm aftraid if it gets too much pressure it will 'ballon' my tank, plus, I just hate for anything to not be squeaky-rightous on my baby. Popping the gas-cap to releave the pressure is not a long term option for my OCD'ed personality. ;-)

I would start with taking the petcock off and giving it a once over.
