Now I have done this to clean an old chain that I didn't care about, but it's worth noting that every chain manufacturer disagrees completely with that statement. They advise against the use of WD40. This is a topic of great debate, right up there with which oil is best and which tires are best.
For me, it's just so easy to run down to the local bike shop and get some chain cleaner. Peace of mind is a hell of a thing...

I know its not hot sauce, but I use that sh*t on everything. WD-40 that is. I use it to clean my chain, wheels, frame, basically everything but the grips and seats.
I use simple green to clean just about everything else.
I don't think the WD debate will ever end, but that's cool.

Funny, I've used DID and EK and both have told me that WD40 is fine to use to clean the chain. The O Rings are sealed and there's nothing that's getting into them.
I agree though, this is one of those things that some will agree and disagree with. Kinda like the squids that don't know they're squids.
