A modern chain only needs the side plates lubricating with gear oil 80w/90 grade. I wipe mine with a rag soaked in paraffin and then wipe it clean before brushing the gear oil on the lower run of the chain but not on the rollers, just the side plates. I think buying expensive lubes is just lining the pockets of the manufacturers and is not necessary. There again that's just my opinion. In the 'good old days' we used to take the chain off the bike and soak it in a tin of grease/graphite mixture over a primus stove and then hang it up to drip dry. Worked wonders! No need to do that any more I'm glad to say! Lol!

Oh, really? I waited a few days for the reply I sent to the makers of Simple Green late last week, asking if there was any chance that it could penetrate past the O-rings on a motorcycle chain and mix with the grease packed inside. It's the same question I asked the makers of WD-40.

Shown below is their reply. Again, feel free to verify its authenticity by contacting the Simple Green rep who is named in the email.

Now then, I have provided proof from the MANUFACTURER of each product that WD-40 can do harm to an O-ring chain and that Simple Green cannot. I have been saying this for a long time. You people can continue to use whatever you want but it is not a matter of personal opinion as to what each product can or cannot do. Any questions?

Subject: Simple Green Inquiry

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for contacting Simple Green and for your interest in our products.

Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner should not penetrate through the seals on your motorcycles O-ring style chain. It is recommended to limit the contact time to less than 5 minutes and always keep in mind that it needs to be thoroughly rinsed and completely dry prior to re-lubing the chain.

I hope that this information helps. If you have further questions about this or other Simple Green products or uses, please feel free to contact me via reply email or directly. My contact information is provided below and my regular business hours are Mon thru Fri from 8 -5 Pacific Standard Time.

Thank you again for your inquiry.

Sincerely,

Theresa Provolt
