Crickets...nothing but cricket sounds coming from the WD-40 fanatics camp now. Wow, that was easy.

I use WD-40 to clean the chain, not lube it.

I use some Liquid Wrench lube to lube it up.

Clean chain with paraffin, wipe clean and then brush on Gear oil 80w/90. Repeat every 500 miles or so-sorted and as the book says! What's all the fuss about?

No, I just hadn't logged in since my last reply.
That email from wd means nothing. They're just trying to play it safe. I'm sure simple green would play the same game.
"Penetrating" just means it's low viscosity. Like water. Or simple green, like you use.

I've been using WD for almost 20k miles exclusively, and I always used it to clean before that, and I'm certainly not the only one. Some have been using it exclusively for 100k+. It won't hurt your chain.

The WD-40 makers have admitted that their penetrant can cause harm to the grease packed inside an O-ring chain. What more proof do you want? I contacted the WD-40 company. Contact Simple Green and post their reply.

And isn't RK the company that makes and sells new chains? I'm sure they would love to sell more chains more often to people who do things to them that cause premature wear. Great marketing strategy if you ask me.

I don't think its a very wise business practice to recommend the use of a product which compromises the integrity, especially one what could cause death if it fails.

Hmmm, I would like to see what simple green has to say about their product used on mc chains... I'm sure they say that it should work however, it was not designed with that in mind. Now I don't use WD-40 on my chain, or ever as a real lubricant, HOWEVER! and its a big however, for the price it cannot be beat on cleaning up a super dirty bike, its truly awe inspiring with just a little bit of elbow grease and time what it will clean, I buy it by the gallon, and have an extra spray can in my truck if there is a bind.

Off of the website: (the pertains to bicycles however should get you thinking about mc's) <--- Don't care, I still don't let it touch my chain if I don't have too. At least I recognize that it is my suspicion and was how I was brought up, use the correct tool for the job when you can.

WD-40 and Bikes

Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product should not be used on bike chains.
Fact:
While WD-40 Multi-Use Product it is not a grease, it is formulated with strong lubricating oils and other ingredients, and is a terrific product to use for bike maintenance. It does not attract dirt or moisture to metal surfaces – just be sure to wipe off any excess WD-40 Multi-Use Product before riding.

For long-term lubrication and other specialized bicycle maintenance needs, check out WD-40® BIKE. Developed specifically for cyclists and mechanics, this high-performance line of bicycle care products is sure to become a mainstay in the toolboxes of bike mechanics for decades
