Default chain clip/rivit

I just installed a rk 520 chain -1 in front on my '05 f4i and I know they say to use a rivit link but mine only came with the clip link. The instructions on the kit said that some come with a clip and some come with a rivit or both. Iused it, but was wondering if I should switch to a rivit link? Also where topick up a rivit link? It's winter here in Mass. soI have not even rode it yet. Thanks

Your going to get a lot of differing opinions on this one...So here's mine:

I've raced and ridden with both rivit and clip links. Clips links work just fine, providing the are installed correctly (the right direction), and the chain is aligned well (it's straight). The biggest issue I've seen with clip links (and rivit lints for that matter) that have failed is they don't get installed with the right tools, a chain press and or chain rivit tool. A vise grip is NOT the right tool!

If you do decide to go the rivit link any local shop should either have them in stock or be able to order them, they run between $5.00 and $15.00 each depending on the chain type and dealer mark-up. Make sure you get the brand and type that matches you chain (don't put a DID rivit link on a RK chain, etc...) if you do you're just asking for a failure. Also you might want to pick a an extra one or two espicially if you've never put one on before, the most common mistake I've seen is overtightening the rivit tool and braking or cracking the rivit itself.

I have had a clip fail before, but not enough for me to say they are no good. I say either is fine.

Clip type ones are fine and easier to install. You can actually safety wire the clip on there for added safety (I do this on my track bikes)
