It's happened on a few friends bikes, sump plug falls out & if the leaking oil does not cause an off, they usually just keep going unawares until the bike overheats & stalls. This has only ever happened on air cooled twin & multi, maybe water cooled may make a difference?. But after reinstalling a plug & oil, the bikes seemed to survive ok, although long term??

There's more; old oil that has microscopic partials act like sandpaper and cut away at the soft bearing material. This is turn opens up the gap between the bearing and the journal and oil pressure drops. The bigger gap and lose of pressure may cause a rod to knock under load. Older engines experience lose of pressure with age due to poor oil maintenance. You can go with an thicker oil to help the problem but the real fix is to re-work the lower end to get the oil pressure back up. With real poor oil pressure the engine will kill itself as oil will not make it to the cams and other areas and the rods will knock the chit out of the crank.

Oil is cheaper than a new engine.
