1998 CBR600, engine stopped when riding
I’ve had the bike 3 weeks. Yesterday I had done around 40miles with no problems. I was doing around 20mph when the engine stopped. Luckily I freewheeled to a stop. There was absolutely no electrical power. I managed to bump start the bike down a hill. I carried on for around 10minutes and it happened again. A good biker guy stopped and offered assistance, he has far more technical knowledge than myself, we both agreed that there was possibly a faint electrical burning type smell. I managed to bump start again but had no intention to ride home, so switched off. The dash lights came on slightly but the bike would not start, I did hear the clicking noise when attempting to start, possibly suggesting a faulty solenoid? Could a faulty solenoid drain the battery when riding? Would a flat battery cause the engine to stop when running?
bad battery, or bad stator/charging circuit - check your regulator, charge your battery, check voltages.
A flat battery won't stop the bike, but a flat battery and a broken charging system will.

Burning smell's not good. In 99.99% of these cases, it's problem with wiring: broken or frayed or shorted wiring and/or corroded or disconnected terminals in connectors. All parts are usually perfectly fine. Although bad wiring can prevent recharging battery and running it down multiple times will eventually destroy it.
Disconnect and inspect all wiring connectors having to do with power and battery charging.
