Default 1994 Honda CBR 1000 F battery is not charging

Hi guys, I am new to this forum so here is a little bit of context as of today April 10, 2026. I have bought my first motorcycle. I have been driving motorcycles for a long time but this is my first purchase. I just bought a 1994 Honda CBR 1000 F the guy bought it from which I paid $2500. Said the bike was ready to ride needed nothing I got home. It’s still cold out so I started it up a couple times. Didn’t think anything of it then I gotta drive it it stalls and is dead so I thought it was the battery. I go out buy a new battery put it in thinking nothing of it. Driving it after about 20 minutes, the bike dies I put the multimeter on the battery and it’s 13 V before I start it and drops down to 11.25 V when it is running and it decreases in volts very quick so there’s a problem with the charging system. I have ordered a new regulator rectifier it hasn’t come in the mail yet. I’m hoping that is what it is if anybody has any information on where the alternator is or stater or generator and how to replace it. I am going to give my phone number. 6033098725 send me a text message so we can talk. I’ve spent a lot of money on this bike and I’m getting a little bit nervous. I have not been able to ride it more than 0.4 miles.

I hate to say this but I'm not convinced by your diagnosis.

The fact that the battery shows 13v with no load but is low under load suggests a bad battery, not lack of charge - even a brand new battery can be bad. Did you have the battery on charge before you installed it?

Take the battery off and use a multi-stage charger for at least 12 hours, then reinstall and start the bike - does a meter show the voltage rising as you slowly bring the revs up? If so your charging circuit is OK - with a good r&r and a good battery it should rise to about 14.5v by 4,000 revs and then stay there, if the volts stay around 12.5v then yyour need to fit your new r&r.

You better hope it's not the generator - it has been out of stock for over a decade now, and there's only one place that occasionally rebuilds them (in the UK). Most likely as others have said it's the battery - they are notoriously unreliable.

The regulators are fairly bulletproof but not infallable - but they are cheap. The workshop manual has details on how to check the coils in the stator/rotor and how to diagnose the voltages - the most important thing is to check the connector to the regulator - they tend to corrode, get hot, then melt - but rewiring them is trivial.

Make sure to clean the regulator connector so it's pristine - dip it in white vinegar overnight then spray it out with isopropyl if needed. You want it to be showroom perfect.

One final thing to remember is the CBR1000F won't charge the battery at idle - in fact it won't even maintain it, you need around 1500+ RPM to get a useful charging voltage, especially if you changed out the headlamp bulbs for anything brighter than factory.
