Default I need a new battery....I think

I just bought this CBR 600RR, 2004. Nice bike. Runs great. Well that was till I got it home. I had the guys at the shop load it in my truck. They loaded it up put the handlebar tie down things on it. I had never used them before, so I let the guys do it. Well, I drove the 40 miles to the town where I live, then another 20 past that to school.....sat in class for two hours clickin my pen, waiting for the chance to get on that new bike. As soon as class was over, I made a mad dash for the truck and took it home. Unloaded the bike, cranked it....it was fine. Drove it to a friends...about a mile and a half, nothing wrong. Got there, shut it off. Tried to start it again after about ten minutes, nothing. Just this pit feeling that these guys at the dealership ripped me off.

Anyway long story short. I put my battery tender on it. Chargered it put overnight at my buddies house, then brought it home the next day. Seemed to be fine, but I charge it up over night and ride it the next day...seems to go dead within about two to three times of starting it. I can ride to a friends then back to my place like an hour later, Next time I come out it will be dead........

I have a few questions.....

1) More then likely it's the battery, right?
2) Should I make the dealership replace the battery? I've had the bike less then a week, and the problem did start from the moment I got it home.
3) Which brand of battery is best for this kinda bike?

I'm totally new to the CBR family, so I'm notreal sure of what I'mdoing yet. I've had bikes before, I just want to do the best I can to keep this one nice.

Thanks Katie

You can charge it and ride it, but not restart it... is this correct? if so, three things spring to mind:

1. 2003-2004 series 600RRs have a known problem with the Regulator/Rectifier module failing. this device replenishes the battery's charge whilst riding. if it's not working properly, the bike is operated off the battery alone until it cannot function any longer and dies
2. the battery has been sitting, uncharged for a long period of time. this will ruin a battery really fast ESPECIALLY if you apply a quick charge (1 Hr. @ 4 Amps) to it moments before service.
3. The stator is bad and is not supplying proper current to the Regulator/Rectifier Module, thusly not charging the battery.

Test the Battery after a full standard charge (10 Hrs @ 900mA). it should read well into the 13 Volts DC afterwards. If it does, have the battery load tested to ensure it's not internally damaged. IF IT DOES NOT, or if it fails the Load test replace the battery, but continue onto diagnostics.

Test the Regulator/Rectifier Module and the Stator.

Go >>>HERE<<< and download the CSA.pdf file. it wont be there too long, maybe a week at best. use the guide to test your system.

Good luck.

Take it back to the dealership and have them put a new battery in and test the charging system.

My bet is the rectifier. Seen this problem too many times.

Thanks....just the answer I was looking for. I took it back to the dealership today. They said it was a bad battery, my dealer said he had no idea, and that he would replace it out of his pocket if the dealership wouldn't. (They have to clear it with the owner first)

I'm going to use the chart to see where it takes me, I just want to fix the problem before I get stuck on the side of the road.

Thanks again, Katie

One thing about batteries that most people don't know is that after charging it/jumping it a couple times, the battery will be worthless. You can charge the battery but internally it's bad. A car usually has anywhere from 350-875CCA, on a motorcycle its around 150 so charging/jumping probably twice will kill it.

Then if it happens again, don't charge it, change the retcefier (if thats what charges bike batteries, im used to cars) then charge the battery and drive it around for a day and hopefully your battery should be good without having to buy ANOTHER one

Don't fuking change anything until it's VERIFIED BAD. Bluej511, i don't know where you get your information dude, but a battery will be fine if jumped or charged if 'dead'. according to your logic, if the battery is dead, replacing the RR will charge the battery making the battery worthless. That's totally untrue! lemme set you straight here.

A generator be it car or motorcycle has two parts: a Stator and a Rotor. the rotor is magnetic and spins within the stator (a Stator stays in place, a rotor Rotates). When the rotor rotates, it produces electrical current in the stator's windings. this current is Alternating Current (AC) as the electricity produced goes back and forth. as we all know, a motorcycle and a car runs on a 12 volt Direct current (DC) power supply. The AC current generated by the stator/rotor (Collectively called a generator) is Rectified from AC to DC via Inversion. however this energy is not 12 VDC quite yet, it's actually quite a bit higher than 12v at this point. It needs to be regulated down to the proper voltage in order to be used. that's where the Regulator comes in. typically they are all in one units. take apart a generator in a car, you'll see a electrical component in the back of it where your connections are. that's the Regulator/Rectifier Bridge. the black module located on the left side of the motorcycle beside the radiator is also a Regulator/Rectifier bridge, but because it is external to the generator, it's considers a Module... an add on if you will.

hopefully you better understand how the systems works now.

Yes if jumped once or twice it will be alright, but you jump it 3-4+ times then its worthless.

I never said if you change the RR it will charge the battery and make it worthless, if the battery is already crap then with the bike running the battery will still be crap.

I've been an auto tech full time for the past 4 years and deal with a lot of electrical issues/alternators/police packages so i see a lot of bad alternators, a lot of dead batteries and draws. I might have wrote something wrong or you might have misunderstood me. If you jump/charge a battery and the bike/car sits and dies overnight or over a couple days then you can charge it again but it won't help.

See what i'm saying now lol?

But yes of course everything should be tested like always, you don't just go around replacing parts that would just be stupid. Unfortunately most dealerships/technicians just charge you to even look at the thing which i think is ridiculous.

Oh my god, I think my head is going to blow up!

You guys just got way over my head, I mean come on, I'm still a girl here.

I don't think I misunderstood the whole battery charging then it's bad thing. Does that mean everytime I hook a bike up to a battery tender, I shouldn't actually be doing that?

I thought battery tenders were good for your bike?

And back to a few posts before, should I just stick with the chart I printed off from knightslugger and see where it takes me.

See this is why girls get a bad rap for working on there own cars, trucks, or whatever. You guys FREAK us the HELL out!
