Default temp issues! help

im trying to get back to riding after a long hiatus. my 03 f4i made the move from IL to TX via moving company. literally just before she got loaded, i had her running and everything was normal. i get it to texas. its been 6 months since i've ridden it at all. some occasional startups, let it run for a few minutes then shut it down. i don't recall checking for a temp reading. i took it out today and after a while i noticed i still didn't have a temp reading. at no point during my (totally legal) ride did i have a temp reading. that also means no fan running which i know i should have seen/heard. its a little hot to start looking into....well...anything just now but i fully intend to. any ideas on what to check or why im not getting a reading at all? all i get is the 2 hash marks like when you start it up cold.

Sounds like the temp sensor is loose/shorted/dis-connected.
Check to see if it was jiggled loose in the move.

Even if it is not reporting to the guages, the fan will still operate.
It has it's own thermo-couple switch mounted right near the fan.

Check that sensor, it's on the right hand side near the cam-chain
adjuster. Pokes out of the engine, little brass nipple thingy.
there's just one wire that clips to the top of it. At least it is on the
F3, hopefully some-one will correct me if it's different for the F4i.

Jiggling wires is a valid diagnostic technique. Glad it worked out for you.
