so i started up the bike as usual today. everything was fine till i got over 20mph. i then noticed a strange noise coming from the engine area. its really hard to describe... it kinda sounds like when you need new brakes on a car--not as bad--and only when in gear. its like a "shh shh shh shh shh". also, when i pull in the clutch handle and coast there is no noise. i did work on the bike piror to the noise. i adjusted the chain, tightned it up to specs. it was real loose before. any ideas to what this noise could be? could it be that i tightned the chain too much? did you at least check your pads to make sure there ok? other than that not sure. only when in gear....

 

could be the cam chain tensioner. its under the tank on the right side behind the frame it. makes noise only in gear around 3-5000rpm. i think everyone that has a 2001 f4i has had or will have a problem with the cct. ive replaced mine already. does it sound like a really fast paint can rattle?

not the pads for sure. honestly i have no idea what it is. im gonna re-adjust the chain tomorow and see if that makes a diffrence. ive been thinking the worst here peeps, i sure hope it aint nothing bad.

Anyway. Readjust the chain and loosen it a link. Its possible that if its too tight you can have a different engine braking and stiffer cranking.
Which is possibly making that noise. If it was making that shshshshhsh thing while you were clutched in I would say its the valves. But thats not what it seems that you have. Readjust and check the oil glass. Hopefully its that.

 

well its not the chain. i still have no idea what it is. it has gotten worse. looks like ima have to take it in the shop to get looked at. dayum.

 

Did you check the oil indicator glass? Is that fine?

 

make sure when you adjust the chain that you find the tightest spot on the chain or you will make it too tight. also check to make sure you don't have any bad links in the chain.
