Default Shifter Sticking, any suggestions on cause or fixes?

Hey guys,

i ride a 2001 f4i.

was cruising home today and as i started downshifting on the exit ramp, i noticed my shifter was not popping back up. It worked fine when i left work (40 mile ride), i did some shifting mid cruise because of traffic, but when i started down shifting it just stuck down.

i popped it back up with my foot to down shift again, but it only got more difficult. i nursed it into a parking lot and with some force, was able to get it into neutral and assess the problem.

and thats the thing, everything looks normal. i tried just down shifting it multiple times to try to loosen it up, but it was to no avail. I dont think its the clutch, because when i have the clutch in, and finally get the shifter far enough into place, it pops into gear no problem.

i still had 6 miles to go on the high way, by this time, i manually had to reach down and pull very hard to up shift.. i nursed it home in 3rd gear.

has anyone had this problem? what was your cause? what'd you do to fix it?

i havent started working on it yet, wanted to get some ideas before i started...

thanks guys

Mine isn't that hard. Just sometimes when I shift into neutral it will lock and take some force to pull back up

Any chance the adjustment slipped? Is the toe higher or lower than normal?
If the lock-nut's have come loose on the rod between the tranny and the shifter,
it might be just a 'range of motion' issue.
