You're confusing this with EGR. This has nothing to do with unspent exhaust gasses. All it is is recirculated intake air (and fuel). The first link has a gread diagram to help explain it.

No. The popping is simply un burnt fuel igniting in the exhaust. Engine breaking is from compression and compression only

 

Right, I understand now. The air is inserted directly into the exhaust flow; it never enters the cylinder. I looked at the diagram in that first link wrong.

It looks like this would be necessary to do before getting a bike tuned. Do most dyno/tune shops do this? Or should I do it before getting my bike tuned?

A good, calibrated dyno doesn't lie. No hp gains from removing the system. Period

 

dyno shops should remove the line feeding the air from the airbox to the PAIR solenoid. with this mod, they wouldn't need to do that...

 

Has anyone done this and gone through a smog check after? Eventually I'll have to get my bike checked yearly.

 

Do bikes have to undergo an emissions check in your state? Here in MO only cars and trucks had to have that done.

 

Yes bikes do too. We live next to commifornia so we feel we need to be as retarded as them when it comes to emmissions.
