low battery
During the winter, my bike battery got low enough to not start...the dash lights and all still come on, but I was wondering how to push start the bike properly? or should I charge the battery? Where exactly would it be located...Thanks for any help.
Push starting the bike would be possible, probably easiest if you had a pretty good incline you could roll down instead of having to push it on a flat grade. It's basically the same idea as push starting a car with a manual transmission... have the ignition on and the kill switch set to run and the bike in first or second gear with the clutch in, get it rolling at a decent speed and just dump the clutch and give it a little gas. The battery is located under your front seat. To get to it you have to pull back on the outside edges of the back of the front seat to see two bolts on the right and left side that hold the seat down. I beleive they are 10mm, after you remove them, pull the seat towards the passenger seat and it will come right off. After you have the seat off, the battery box is located under the ECU. It's held on top of the battery box by a rubber strap. There is a hook on the side of the battery box that the strap hooks on. Unhook the strap from that hook and the ECU can be moved out of the way. Then just open the top cover on the battery box and that's where the battery is. Once everything is back together and you are replacing your seat, make sure that the plastic clip on the front of the underside of the seat slides under the metal tab that is in between the bolts that hold down the rear of the tank.
You can try to push start, but if it doesn't work you are probably going to have a long push back to your garage.
Try to charge it, but even if that works don't go too far from home because the battery could still be dead and the bike continues to run. You wouldn't be able to tell that the batt is dead until you killed the engine and then tried to start it again. If your batt is dead dead you'll need to replace it. Usually $50-70 for a new batt.
Also, if the bike's been parked for that much time you might want to consider draining the gas too.
