Default Loose Chain

Hey guys,

this thread doesn't pertain to me but to my friend who has an 2001 929RR.

his chain is loose. whehter he adjusts it or not. when i'm riding or driving next to him, all i can hear is his chain and not his engine. he says he adjusted it yesterday but he needs to take the chain off and grease it so it'll fix it, but I told him greasing it won't do the job. his chain is constantly slacking and makes noise even after adjusting after a few days.

is there a solution to this? i had the problem with my bike a while ago but i can't remember what i did with mind to fix it.

might need a new chain there... the chain adjusters should hold the chain in place, unless they aren't locked in place.
a slack chain is very dangerous.

Yeah, long time ago I rode behind him and I could see his chain slacking a good 3 inches or so and I was like WHOA DUDE THATS NOT GOOD AT ALL. I think about 1 1/2 inches or so is good leeway for chain slack, right?

Anyways, I told him to check his adjusters, so hopefully he'll be able to fix it soon enough.

Thanks!

if a new chain is needed personally i would replace the chain and sprockets together as a whole unit.

Yeah this is definitely what you're supposed to do.

Additionally, the only problem I can think would be with the chain adjusters. Before he tightens the axle maybe he should push the wheel forward to make sure the adjusters are set, if that makes sense. I can't imagine the chain adjusters would be vibrating loose.

I bought him a service manual for his bike so hopefully he's actually putting that book to good use.
