RE: a little oil around the engine?
For the heavy stuff (tar, oil, ect.) use a heavy duty degreaser like pictured below. But only for the real dirty parts like the headers, oil cooler, and oil pan. For the rest of the bike, dishwashing liquid is an excellent "mild" degreaser that won't harm plastics or rubber wiring.Bristled brushes are the way to go with engines (toothbrushes). Rinse everything off with water.Always keep liquids away from electronic devices (ecu, rectifier, lights) and their connections. For those, a damp towel works best. I like to make sure and allow plenty of time to allow the engine to dry off before operating. That being said, the Engine Brite smokes like a mother for the first 5 min. when you start the engine, but it eventually stops & evaporates.
warning ~ never attempt to spray a hot engine with water. I have an aunt who's car was overheating. She thought it would be a good idea to throw a bucket of water on it. Ended up cracking the engine block. Doh!

RE: a little oil around the engine?
My motor is bone dry except for one little spot. Ever since I installed the APE manual CCT, over time a tiny tiny bit of oil seeps out from around it (even with the gasket). It's not even close to enough to make the oil level go down, it's just enough to make dirt and crap stick to it. Never actually leaks down to the ground or anything, just right around the CCT and on the edge/corner of the valve cover. Everything else... bone dry (although sometimes dirty)
If you use some brake parts cleaner after every oil change to clean off around the oil filter and the drain bolt, that helps keep everything clean too. Over time those little amounts of oil left behind after an oil change will run down into other places and it'll start looking like a leak
