Somebody I ride with said that if the idle goes up after the engine warms up then most likely it is NOT a valve compression problem...but I'm gonna have it checked out anyway just in case...

All the rattling disappeared on mine ever since I swapped out the CCT...

Adjust your idle. Idle should be around 1250 rpm when warm. Lotta people adjust the idle when cold thinking it's too high and cause the rpms to tank when she warms up.

On the original post:
Horror scenarios aside, ever consider somethin simpler?

Might be time to check / change plugs. Also verify your hoses are connected and there's no fuel blockages (fuel filter, run some injector cleaner)

That is a good idea Better to have a small fix like that than a compression/valve problem that would cost me $1,000's to fix....

Pull your plugs. Note their condition before doing anything (maybe take several pics of them and post them here). Then clean them up and check the gap on them. Put them back in and see how she starts then. If she improves, go buy new plugs.

My only question is: how serious of a concern is this for you? If the bike runs fine otherwise, is this a case of OCD? OCD + motorcycle = bad. You're likely not a serious racer where ever single rpm counts. If you're tinkering simply because you don't feel right unless everything is perfect
  1. You're in for a lifetime of frustration cause the bike will never run perfect
  2. You're just as likely to mess something up as you are of fixing it
