Question F4I fuel gauge

last night I picked up a 2002 f4i. my only question i have now is about the dig fuel gauge. when i first turn my key to "on" and the gauge cycles. it shows the fuel on the left hand side... once the cycle is completed and i fire up the bike the gauge goes away.

is there a way to turn that feature on and off? I am confused as to why it works when it cycels but seems to be burnt out or dim when the bike is on

it only shows reserve
if the gauge is not there it means you haven't gotten down to your "reserve" yet

an no you can't turn it off

Yeah, the fuel gauge is only to let you know how much you have left when you hit reserve (the last ~1 gallon in your tank).

Best way to keep track of gas is to resent your trip odometer each time you fill up completely, and note how many miles you usually get before the light pops on. I'd say an average number is between 140 and 180 miles, depending on the kind of riding you do, how your bike is tuned, etc.
