battery keeps dying then works fine again
ya, my bike does the exact same thing ao.... I can ride for a while, turn it off and it wont start back up, but if it sits for maybe an hour it starts up like a champ.... never have figured out what is wrong with it, and also have tried new battery, didn't fix the problem.

My next guess is the starter.
When hot, the inernal resistance rises and then won't start. Does anyone think that trying to cool the starter with a water hose after a ride would screw anything up? I am not sure if a bike starter is different than a car starter, in a car the shaft/bendixy/thing can get bent and when hot expand enough to where it binds and don't slide out.

The starter and starter relay are only in the circuit during starts. Check the ground side of the starter circuit, including the case where it mounts. Corrosion between the starter body and the block is the most often overlooked area.
sweet.. thanks guys... I'm gonna try that this weekend.. ill let you know how it goes.. i really hope that's the problem.. it really sucks not being able to ride.. especially living in so cal where it doesn't rain that much..
ok guys i think i found something.. one of the bolts that mounts the starter is way loose.. almost falling out loose.. does anyone think thats what could be causing my problem?
well guys one more thing its not.. I replaced the starter and still the same thing.. so next is the starter relay.. I'll let you guys know how it works out once it gets here and i get it on the bike.
