Default Rectifier problem?? Help please

My 93 F2 didn't start for me after a ride yesterday. Got it jumped and got home. Then tried to restart. Dead! I recharged the battery. It reads about 13.5on the meter. When I started the bike. It dropped to 12.6, then when I rev to 5 grand. It only got up to 12.98. That is as high as it will get. Also just started on a cold start and right away the rectifier is to hot to touch?! Thanks for any help

I let it run a little longer and the volts jumped up to 13.34, then dropped back down to 12.34?? It bounces around and still the unit is smoking hot!

Check your stator for a short to ground.

Does the stator supposed to get so hot you can't touch it?? I don't think so. Lol

The rectifier shouldn't be to hot to touch right?!

The original R/R is prone to failure, due to overheating, but yes, they are pretty hot to the touch even when running normally, anyway... that said, I've been quite lucky, as I've got over 30,000 miles on my OEM R/R, and no troubles yet.

Like Demon said, check your stator harness, but definitely check the R/R... here's the various tests to perform on the R/R, and it's associated harness:

And here's the test for checking the stator harness:

ElectroSport Rectifier-Regulator for Honda F2

Yup, and old thread but figured someone might land on it with R/R problems.

My OEM R/R crapped out long ago, and as stated in this thread, the OEM does tend to burn out -- just like the cam tensioner does. Someone suggested getting a third-party R/R-- an ElectroSport and it's worked flawlessly for years. They have a great reputation and I upped the ante on making it last:

--- I don't use the license plate light, so I used that wiring and rigged a 12v computer fan (at the back of it blowing out towards the back of the bike) and housing on it. The fan turns on and off through the ignition switch just like the headlight, etc.

If interested, go to this page and go through the Street Bikes selecting process to find the F2. Yeah, it looks a bit different but its just built better with more heat dissipation due to the ridged design.
