Default Fried the alternator wires!

So I trickle charged my battery while it was still in the bike today as I have in the past without issue. I removed the charger, started her up and soon smelled something burning. The source of the smell was the 3 pin alternator plug that connects the 3 yellow alt wires to the rectifier wires. The plug itself had melted and the wires started fusing together.

What did I do to my bike? Anyone have thoughts? Thanks

Your connecter fried before you replaced it then? And why aftermarket and not a stock rectifier?

The failure of the stock R/R is one of the "common issues" with the F2 - because of it's design (lack of cooling fins on the heat sink), it overheats quickly.

If you go to Honda now, and buy an OEM replacement, it is different than the original, and supposedly, with the new part, the issue has been addressed, but I have never seen the new part... most guys go with aftermarket, or a "swappable" unit from a GSXR or R1.

I'm at about 27K or so on my first F2, and I'm still running the original part with no issues, but I know a lot of guys have had to replace it.

I agree with JNS, it is a downward spiral from the Stator, Rectifier and sometimes leads to a dead cell in the battery. As JNS said replace the R/R and Stator.

Thanks guys, yea I figured as much, I ordered one on eBay new for 20 bucks. Do I really need a new stator though?

You found an R/R, new, for $20?!? Did they make it out of tin foil??
Seriously though, that is beyond cheap - unless the seller bought a new one, never ended up needing it, and is now just trying to unload it, I would be concerned about the quality of a $20 R/R!

As for the stator, test it. I see no reason that you should replace the stator, unless it doesn't test out ok... there's diagnostic parameters for this in the manual.
