Bought myself a 954 (project)
I managed to get in the shop over the weekend. Engine is now out. If I was asked if it was a difficult job, I would have to say no. Everything worked out well. Even the swing arm and lower mount. I'd say the hardest part, which wasn't very hard, was pulling the throttle bodies off the boots.
Pretty cool how far she got stripped though. Next round of shop time for me, Leak test to determine how far I'm going with it.

Not so lucky with this one. Decision time. I've got two cylinders leaking almost 15% and two less than 5. Exhaust valves are bad on 3 & 4.
I'll pop the head off and have a closer look. Right now, unless I see something real ugly inside, I'll do the head and re-ring it. At least I should know what I have when I'm done.
Should be fun!

I agree with you there, it is part of the fun bringing something back from the edge and making it good, anyone can buy a replacement and drop it in , but to put an engine right and then put it in is a good feeling
Another round in the shop. Loving it.
I'm almost ready to split the cases. For an engine with 40k miles on it she looks good. I'm measuring standard bore so I have options. Next round I'll measure the pistons and ring end gaps. Hoping to still just re-ring but you never know! Cylinders look good. Short piston skirt wear is noticeable for sure.
Here's a pic of the bottom end with oil pan off. Interesting bit I found hanging out inside the case. It could have been bad!

If anyone has any ideas as to what that bit may have been, I'd be interested. The oil pan and covers, no gaskets just RTV Black. Felt marks on Cam gears. I'm guessing someone has been in here before.
I'm thinking the bit was a hook, maybe to hold the cam chain up and then dropped.

Hi matey , before you do to much cleaning of parts just bear in mind the cylinder wall and piston skirts have a coating on , make sure you don't rub that off , and I would suggest the best rings you can get (bike related)
Question: crankcase bolts and head bolts, do I have to replace them?
