i had my 954rr at a track day and downshifted for a corner while under braking when the thing let loose. I'm thinking a valve spring blew or something else on the top end... the motor will still start and run... barely. It sounds horrible, so i shut it down before it could get worse.

It blew at a high rpm with a moderate amt of backpressure, but not severe. It has 19,000 miles on it with all the scheduled regular maintanence... i had even just changed the oil over to repsol fully synthetic ~500 miles prior to the incident.

has anyone ever had trouble with the top of the motor going out in the 954? any suggestions on where to buy parts such as valves or springs to rebuild it?

 

never heard of blowin the heads, first place to try is ebay you can usually find someone selling the heads. thats actually weird, doesnt make any sense

 

i have never had a top end blow on my 954 or my 929... its usually the crank bearings that go on my bikes... i stunt ride though but never any rev limiter or anything. bring it to a shop and let the mec. listen to it.

 

i think u have a project on your hands...... rip it apart!

 

Check several places for the parts. It should not be too bad the motor comes out easy. Just make sure you mark all the parts bins
