Shifting/accleration
Hey guy's a little new to the biker scene so dont bash too hard, When i'm shifting.. is there an ideal rpm to shift at?.. i generally take it to 4 or 5.. depending on what gear i'm in.. Also if i'm on the city streets if i lay off the throttle a bit then hit it again, i get kind of a clunky sound then it goes without a hitch.. newbie questions i know.. but i just want to be on the safe side

well ur bike doesnt come alive till after 6000 rpm thats where all your power lyes shifting around 9000 and red line hahahahaa thats where i shift infact im never under 6000 this way im ready for anything
Right on, joe200803. Mine does the same thing.
As far as RPMs and shifting, I admit I'm taking a bit of time getting used to the 929's close-ratio trans. When I'm really hitting it, it's almost like the trans could have been a 4-speed, the gears are so close. I'm mostly highway, and I get the impression the close-ratio trans was designed for a winding track with lots of turns. A lot of times I skip 3rd and 5th.

So, my chain was 10mm too tight or so they said when they checked it out.. how should i go about changing the slack of the chain?.. i'm really new to bikes so i dont know exactly what i can do and what i cant do..
Another question a little off the topic, but i've noticed when i punch it at a light on getting on the freeway i'll get a little gas odor.. not sure if its running rich or maybe its leaking a little gas out of one of the lines.. they did a test to check for leaks when i got it inspected and it came back good.. so i dunno.. tips would be appericiated.

and for the gas smell, no idea. could be a gas leak. could be an overly rich condition. could just be an exhaust smell. really cannot diagnose that without knowing which model of 929 (cali, euro, 49-state) that you have. if its the cali model, then i would assume that it is probably the useless extra garbage that was added by the factory. if it is a lean condition, then i would recommend a plug change and possibly a pc3 to ensure that you are getting the proper air/fuel ratio for your setup. and they supposedly checked for gas leaks, but i would check again to make sure. you stated that you get the smell when punching it at a light so i highly doubt it would be a fuel leak. the smell would be constant, even when sitting without running.
I'll Take a close look tomorrow.. i certainly hope there aern't any leaks.. then again it's merely the problem of replacing a clamp... as far as the plug change, it has 9,400 on the clock, it had the 8,000 mile service done about a year ago....I'm kinda scared to dive into this haha.. i am assuming i can search for it, but can you guys maybe point me in the right direction of service requirements of the bike? like when to take it in and get the fluids changed, tune ups etc?.. just want to make sure it's getting the proper care
