Default Rear wheel dampers

I bought my bike new, and it's not used much. Only 5K miles on it. It started clunking while shifting. Rubber powder under bike. Removed wheel and found no dampers! Just some powder. Bought some aftermarket dampers and now putting it back together. It left a mess and I cleaned it pretty good, but not sure about these dampers... saving money you know. Really tight trying to put in together. My question is this, should I maybe heat up the dampers some to make them more flexible and maybe use some silicone grease. Wanted to ask before taking a rubber mallet to it? Thx Will

Clean the surfaces really good then apply a small amount of grease to the dampers. You want a tight fit for the sprocket carrier.
