Default question about heli coil installation...

I was changing the plugs on my newly purchased 929RE the other day. The first 3 were a breeze, but when i got to #4 plug i noticed it was hard coming out. When i got the plug out i noticed a helicoil came out with it. The threads on the helicoil do not look good. The thread pitch on the insert used on the plug was 10x1.0. Well im pretty sure a new insert is needed but my question is will an insert screw right in or will i need to drill and install a new insert. And if so what size will have to be used? I guess what i'm tryin to ask is, will i have to go to a plug with a diff thread pitch or do they make an oversized helicoil insert? Any help or suggestion are greatly appreciated.

I'd try using the same helicoil and some liquid metal to see if it will bond (since it was tight coming out) with copper coat between the plug and the helicoil for next removal big job to redrill.
Best of luck

I have the time-sert kit for our bikes if you want to rent it. I did mine about 7k miles ago and it's still holding great. You just use a bunch of grease on the drill and taps, cleaning and regreasing often. Then I turned the motor to TDC on the exhaust stroke of that cylinder, and blew air up the tailpipe to shoot any stray chips out the plug hole. PM me if you want to use the thing.

They are brass and flare out, and makes a nice new seat for the plug. Plus they can't be threaded through into the cylinder.

Will I be able to use the same thread pitch though. If so I'd definitely be interested in renting the kit from you. I'm starting on pulling the engine out today.

Yup, the kit is specifically for sportbikes that are M10x1mm, and it's the extended one because of how deep the access hole is for our plugs. Here is the kit so you know what you're getting into:

Since it's already been coiled by the previous owner, the drill part will barely be removing any material. You'll be able to drill it by hand and the important part is getting a nice seat for the lip of the insert. I'm sending a PM for details to get the thing from me as well.

I would use the time sert also they are a solid insert and they can be pinned it with out the use of adhesives or anything like that, like the other guy said use a lot of grease so you dont get metal shavings in the head but it would be wise to remove the head!!

one more thumbs up for time serts. used one on a timing belt tensioner on a CRX and spark plug on a turbo subaru, both lasted a long time. can't say enough good things about them, way better than a heli-coil.
