Default looking for some pointers/tips

I just got an 01 929 with just under 10k miles. The body/fairings need a little work. But what I really need are some pointers as what to look for as far as maintenance goes. The bike did not come with much service history records so I really want to look the bike over and try to get it back into shape mechanically speaking. Of course I plan on changing the oil and performing a small tune and checking all fluid levels.

Are there any common problems that come up around the milage of 10k for the 929?

Just figured I'd ask as many of you can probably tell me most of what I need to know.

Thanks

Have you downloaded the service manual from the sticky yet? It has service intervals, but 16k is your first valve inspection. Regular oil changes make it easy since everything will still be in spec. Our plus are iridium, so in my experience are good till 50-75k, but when you do the valves pull them out to check for any signs of detonation or lean conditions.

cam chain tensioner went out on mine around 15,000 miles did the valves at 20,000 and changed the stator at 30,000. I love this bike. 35,000 miles now and still rollin great.

My '01 929 now has about 45k miles on it, burns next to no oil, has never had the valves adjusted, and just did a 1200 mile road trip without missing a beat. It has chewed one stator, though service is not going to pick that one up. Regularly feed it good oil and you should be good.
