There's a conector under the tank that has four wires;(speed sensor, oil pressure, neutral sensor and water temp), check that conection or simplyremove the wire from the temp sensor and by grouding it the needle should go up, if it doesn't the gauge is bad. If it does its your sensor. The sensor is located under the thermostat housing on the head. I hope that helps. Johnny

the speed sensor that connectsby the front gear , i dont have that piece at all . then i know it plugs into a connector under the tank. i guess what im curious about is it all hooked up off one connector? because my neautral sensor works, my oil light isnt on (so im assuming the oil pressure is being read good), im totally missing the speedometer sensor, im just not sure how the temp sensor connects.

hope im not makign things too confusing for those who are trying to help [&:]

You Know what , I was wrong the seed sensor is a single connection to one connector. I just converted my 94 to a 96 front end and I had to change my gauges to fit the upper fairing and mainstay bracket so my old gauges were manuel on the speedometer. Changing the gauges to a 96 went to electrical speedometer so I had to change wiring harrness as well and I got the sprocket cover with the speed sensor to make everything work. The connections are under the tank but the speed sensor connection is by itself with tree wires. When I changed to the 96 I had to iliminate my fuel pump because the 96 comes withou the pump. I hpoe this helps. Johnny

On my 98, the temp sensor works fine even when the speedo is not connected. On mine, it is a small bullet connector to the water temp sensor in the head. Make sure the wire is connected. I've never heard of a water temp sensor going bad.
