that was the first thing I noticed in that picture, hey estate: if you upgrade your r/r now!! you might save yourself an extra hundred bucks on having to replace the stator at the same time.. there are tons on write-ups on the site using r/r's from R-1's and couple other late model bikes.. and once its upgraded they usually fair really well.. this is from what read only!! good eye Gotcbr!!
anyway if your r/r does go, it will surely burn the stator out.. I would dear to say on the older models, this was def it weakest link..

It could burn out the stator but its not a given. ;-) Most times, those old flat style R/R's just start malfunctioning & then die...sometimes melting the plug on the harness, sometimes not. When my old SH633-12 died, fortunately it was just the unit itself. I replaced it w/ the new unit that factory Honda revised & superseded the old unit w/, the 31600-MV4-010.

gotcbr: no I know! and your right, only thing i'll add to the convo that's relavant is my 95 just had my r/r go on it and took the stator with it .. and I would just have to add that age must have played a factor. with only 11,500 for miles its the only thing I can think of.. unless theres short but I've thrown a thousand miles on so far with exactly the replacement r/r you replaced yours with..(ricks)
anyway I have read way to many threads not to be highly suspect of the older Honda charging systems..
heres an excellent thread from 2009 in the 900section of the site.. really great write up, but missing the picture links..

Estate, I know you are an EBAYer but this is one part you might want to consider biting the bullet (it is an expensive little part) and get it from a dealer. if you know a reputable EBAY seller then OK otherwise you dont know if it is really a brand new part or refurbished or used being sold as "new". and you want this part to be new. I went to the dealer and asked for a better price than the first price they gave me. (forget what I paid but it wasn't a bargain)

others have put in RRs from other bikes and there are write ups here on CBRF. maybe someone can relay their success story as another option.
