Default hi. and a tech question about speed sensors

Hiya. Thanks for reading. I've acquired a non running sc33 that I'm slowly trying to get back in some sort of shape.
Whilst I was inspecting the carbs I noticed that what the manual calls a 'speed sensor' isn't plugged in to anything. And the Haynes manual picture shows it plugging in to a socket on the right of the frame by the airbox. Black/grey. Pink and green wire.but there's already a socket plugged in to that hole. Which traces back to the sprocket cover housing.and what the manual calls the 'speedometer sensor'.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
Should the bike have both?
And if so where does the speedometer sensor usually plug in?
Or is this perhaps a sign the engine has been changed for a different year model? And that 900rr Speedo systems changed over time?
Sorry if these are silly questions.
First honda CBR I've owned.
Thanks
Sinead

Hi and welcome @Minerva to the forum. The speed sensor connects to the speedometer up in the gauge cluster. The Pink/Green wire is the signal wire from the sensor that is sending pulses to the speedometer. The other two wires from the sensor are power and ground. Depending on the year you have, the sensor could be on the front sprocket cover or attached to the engine case behind the cylinders.

Default thanks

Thank you. The bike has a speed sensor on the sprocket cover.and one on the engine casing. Identical wires from both. I can only plug one in . It's currently not working so I think I'll switch to the engine casing one and see if that works. It's been off the road for some years. I'm recommissioning it. It was free . Cleaned carbs. Changed oil. And have fitted new waterpump and a new radiator will go on today. It's running fine.
I think my bike. A 96. Has a later engine fitted.
As it shouldn't have the engine speed sensor.

😸
