Oh no another question about oils??
Don't worry this isn't a debate on which oil to use and why lol. I just changed my oil on my bike for the 1st time (btw she runs super smooth now
). So lets start from the beginning.
I went to a cycle shop and asked one of the guys there about oils and which one to use. I just bought my bike awhile back from a used bike dealer. So I never bothered to ask what type of oil to use or what oil the previous owner had in there. The guy at the cycle shop suggested that I run semi-syn for now and then after a few changes switch to fully synth. He also told me that once I run fully synth you don't want to go back down an oil grade.
My question (finally) is do I need to switch to fully synth after a few oil changes? So basically I am questioning the truth of what the guy told me. I didn't want to sound like a jackass and question him and I didn't want to look like a dumbass to call him out even though I don't know jackshyt about oils lol. Btw I am using Motorex semi syn and I can definetely see a major improvement in how smooth things are with shifting and accelerating.

is your bike new? you dont want to break in an engine with synthetic. its to "slick". ive never used a semi synthetic. i used Honda oil (fossil) for the 2k before i switched to a synthetic. sytnthetic will last longer and is over all better then standard oil. i dont know why you couldnt switch from synthetic back to normal, im sure some one on here might. i dont know why you would switch back though, other then to save money
I have an 05 RR so no worries on using synthetic on it. My main concerns was yes cost and just the truth of what the guy told me. Im thinking now that he prolly meant that after using synthetic you don't want to go back because of the quality of the oil vs just normal oils
.
Well thanks for all your inputs and for now I will research on what oils are available that are both good in quality and cost effective. I mean jebus $68 bucks for just the oil and filter. To me thats a lot and good thing I know knew how to change it vs having a shop do it for me.

Don't buy into the Synth oil stuff. The main difference between synth, blend and normal oil is their breakdown period and the hole left in your wallet. If you change your oil at the recommended intervals, or even sooner as I think most of us do, then the oil does not have a chance to break down at all.
I used to go with the expensive oils because I though they were better. Lately I've switched to Shell Rotella T 15w40 ($11 gallon) after doing some research on the racing forums and found that it's great and available at Wal-Mart and Tractor Supply. I change my oil about every 2000 miles or so, after all my riding around town, heat, cold and track days I've not had a single issue. I know several people that swear by the Rotella with either Honda filters or Purolator and wont put anything else in their bikes.

I just did my first oil change myself on my 2003 954rr with 13500mi. on it. And I must say damn what a differance. I used a Honda filter and HONDA RECCOMMENDED oil. And I just cant believe how smooth and clean it rides. I owned the bike for about a month now and it has never ran better. And I only been riding for about a month. I am an ASE certified auto technician so yeah i am a gear head. But bikes are a new venture for me. What do you guys think about Honda oil. Its hard to believe any other oil can make it run better... Synthetic ??? Why??? I dont race it on the track but I ride it hard. Is Synthetic really prefurred or is just a peace of mind thing ???
