I actually use motul 20w50 to slow oil consumption problems and was told the only ill effects I may get is some clutch 'stickyness' watever that means. I have felt no difference apart from easier gear changes than before, the previous owner probably put some kind of 'smoke stop elixer' in it to sell to me as gear changes are now better but smoke production is up!

I've just put 20/50 in my cane. Been running it for a week now and have to admit it has changed the feel of the engine for the better.
I've always stuck to Motul 10/40 but having read the experiences of others around here who have gone to 20/50 I thought what the hell, and took the plunge.
The main reason for doing this was to quieten the CCT.
Not only did I drain the oil but also removed the cam cover and sucked all the remaining oil out of the CCT oil chamber. I worked the remaining oil out of the CCT piston so that the whole thing was empty of the old oil. (it takes a while to do this and is much easier of the top chain guide is removed to enable getting a god sized screw driver onto the arm of the tensioner).
I refilled the CCT chamber with 20/50 and pumped the tensioner to get the oil back into the cylinder.
Once she was all back together and spinning over I was quite surprised at the reduction in CC noise. Having done about 500 miles this week she's still sounding quiet.
The oil? Some cheap stuff from a local car spares shop.
The only time I get white smoke is when it's really cold and then only for a minute or two.
I may well be changing the oil more regularly than I did before though, just to be on the safe side but so far, so good.
