I use 10W40 and I'm in Philadelphia.

We get hot here too, but it is usually only during the peak of the summer months.

I really would not want to use 20/50 these days, not even in the car ... most say 10/40 semi or full synthetic and make sure it's for bikes otherwise you can have clutch problems ... I would just use what the manufacturer in your owner's manual suggests, afterall they made the bike and should have some idea ...

The people who have replied to you don't live in 90-100 weather 80% of the year like you and I do. I have been running 20w50 in my f4i and my 1000RR for a while now and it runs great. Because I live in Texas its 80-100 about 80% of the year. You should be just fine and I recommend that since I've been to AZ and it's hotter then nutt sack there

just my 2 cents.

Modern cooling systems on bikes tend to be very efficient and keep the engine running at peak efficiency even in extremes of temperature ... most modern oils and especially semi and full synthetics are more than capable of withstanding very high temperatures.

Most of the wear and tear occurs at cold temperatures when a bike engine is cold and first started up, therefore the 10/40 oil especially in synthetic form gives you that extra protection at start up as it is "thinner" ... also it is what the manuals recommend :-)

I went ahead and switched to Rotella synthetic 5W-40 and have noticed much improved shifting. Along those lines, they also make a 15W-50 synthetic which might suit your needs.

Repsol Full Synthetic 20/50

It's about $40 for a 5 quart container, but after over 6,000 miles my oil is still light tan.
