oils ain't oils!!!
Am doing a bit of (probably overdue) maintenance, already have the oil i'm going to do change with but received this info below from a bike shop today and wondered what oil others are using??? peterk
"3 main oil types are mineral, mineral oils with an ester base (semi-synthetic) and fully synthetic oils. What oil you choose will depend on numerous factors like; your type of riding (commuting, racing, ride days and weekend blasts etc.), engine configuration (V-Twin, In-line 4, Single etc.), age of engine (air cooled or water cooled) and wear and tear the engine has been exposed to."

This is one of the best sites I've found for understanding motor oil. It has more information about Oil than I ever wanted to know. He also has a great section on oil filters.

I'm using Shell Advance SX4, but I have clutch slip under max load, (I think when the bike is cold).
I am thinking of changing, My new mechanic (mechanic No 4, so far, it called elimination) uses Motorex and recommends a semi-synthetic.
any thoughts?

I'd say the CBR1000F's engine isn't highly strung enough to warrant fully synthetic oil....I've always used
a good quality semi-synth in my CBR with no probs whatsoever.I think regular oil changes are quite important
to the life of an engine so change min every 2 - 3000 miles.
Brands of oil i've used and recommend are
Silkolene
Castrol
Morris - (which is in the bike currently)
Am i the only one who thinks fully synth ain't required for the CBR1000F,or are any of you running it in yours?

I run full synth 15W-40 in mine right now, but I talked too a guy yesterday whom have been riding CBR1000F's for many years, and he ment that a semi synth was more than good enough for the bike... So I might try that the next time.
I used to use Diesel because of its ability to cope with shear!
But I now use Mobil 1 fully synthetic. To be honest tho' the only reason I use fully synthetic is because I get it cheap.
If I have to pay normal price then I would just go for a Dino or semi dino.
But the main thing to consider is how often you change rather than what you use.

Trips, how many changes a year? or how many k's a year. was in perth in the early '81, nice place, went to the Black Duck Rally, ever heard of it, is it still going???
Never heard of black duck rally. But only been here for 10 years so I am not counted as a local.
The Roads suck, but the weather's great. The twisty ones are all bumpy gravel ridden goat tracks. The one the Brockie died on was a favourite bike hoon road. Of course now it will be full of sightseers and mourners etc.
I do about 40,000 a year so I go through a lot of oil changes.
