Default The cops...

Well, thanks for the kind words there. There is no way in Hell that I can take the MSF course anytime soon unless I go in EVERY day and wait to see if anyone fails to show up and an opening emerges. Not gonna happen but perhaps next year I can make a reservation ahead of time. Like, three months ahead of time since those spots fill up rather quickly. Does making a situation worse by being an ******* to a LEO going to solve all of my problems? Hell no and I can't even imagine the types of people that cops run into on a daily basis. I am a pretty even-tempered guy who just happens to like to go fast once in awhile. I have a problem with some of the laws in this country, not the cops who try and enforce them since most of the officers' don't write the laws themselves. I would try not to stop a bike, especially a rocket if I had a uniform and if I did, they might just get a warning. When the guy that pulled me over and I were talking, I told him that it's very easy to get over the speed limit, even on a mid-sized bike like the 600RR. He knew next to nothing about bikes and told me that he's scared to get on a rocket. Still, the laws regarding getting a permit are folly since all you have to do is read a small piece of literature and then pass the written test, making you legal to ride during the day. So the state has no problem with an 18yr-old who has never been on a bike at all, going into a showroom and buying a liter-bike as their first ride, huh? As long as he rides during the day with no passengers and he wears a helmet, there is no problem there. That's the law in this state. No MSF course required whatsoever. Then there is me, a rider with about 15,000 miles under his belt who let his permit expire who went a little faster than normal and I have to pay the price. I'm sure that once I tell the judge that I did go and try and get a permit before I got pulled over as well as showing proof that I did go get my eyes checked the same hour that I failed the exam, everything should turn out well with just a fine. Once the glasses arrive I will get the permit and sign up for the skills test. Will I speed again? Of course but I will also be civil to any LEO's that happen to catch me being bad. You play, you pay...And I love to play...

Well, when the cop pulled me over he said that he was about to call ahead until he saw that I stopped right away, which he thanked me for later. The laws regarding getting an endorsement or a permit are beyond archaic and do not make the roads any safer. All I have to do is read a small pamphlet and pass an easy touch-screen test and I am legal to start riding my brand new 'busa without any prior riding experience. As long as I wear a helmet and I don't ride at night or with a passenger, everything is ok according to the state of Ohio. The skills test is another joke. Can you swerve at 10mph and avoid a log? That's one portion of the test. Pathetic...

hehe, there's always that little voice in my head "I could run from the coppers". Expecially when the cop is going the other direction. Sadly, I just end up stopping and wait for the cop and maybe reason with them... Nope, they never do. Basturds always throw the book at sport bikers. I always want to argue that cell phones are the most dangerous ppl on the road these days.

Default First ticket...

Well, I went to court today and all the judge did was make me pay a $150 fine and that was that. He never even said anything about the speeding other than the fact that is was one of my charges. He told me just to get my endoresment and that was that. The cop told me while we were waiting in his car that the speeding charge would be dropped so at least that was good news. That will never happen again because I am looking into getting a detector in the future so I can ride without worry. I also got my new jacket today which no longer makes me a squid, lol. Does anyone know what the best gloves are for easing the pain and numbness of my hands? All in all, I am legal again and as far as cops being dicks, my buddy got pulled over on his R1 with only a permit at night, for doing ten over the speed limit. He was let go despite being in violation of his restriction(no night riding). The cop told him to go home and call it a night. Some people are just lucky...

Goofy fixes of the year:

1) Scraping foot pegs: change the rear sets (not adjust rider form)
2) Got some head shake: buy a steering damper (not adjust grip on bars)
3) get speeding ticket: buy radar detector (not avoid speeding)

It pretty much depends on who stops you. They are human beings just like us. There are some REALLY good guys in law enforcement. They are stellar human beings who make a difference in this world for the better. But there is a whole other side to law enforcement too that many don't understand.

In fact, I went through Police Academy way back in the 70s. I served as a police officer for about a year. Then bailed. It was too political, too corrupt, too discouraging, too arbitrary...I could go on and on.

Not a small number in law enforcement that I know (my brother in law is a chief of police for a significant city; I have quite a few friends in law enforcement too), are folks with some pretty pronounced psychological "issues". Many are power hungry dudes who get off on really pushing folks around cause they have a gun & badge.

I'll never forget the ole battle cry by our supervisor at shift change in the squad room...."OK folks, time to go harrass the public!!" If I heard this once, I heard it a 100 times....Sigh!!!![>:]

Too many of our laws have been forced upon us by special interests, politicians with hidden agendas, etc. Remember the INfamous 55 mph national speed limit of days gone by? Over the time that horrible law was in effect, litterally billions were stolen from Americans by law enforcement innacting illicit traffic fines propped up by a ridiculous law. I rest my case.

I think most laws in America ought to be decided by referendums of we the people, not politicians in sessions that we have little to no control over. We need far less rules, but the ones we would agree to have by referendum ought to be strictly enforced. A perfect example: Driving with one hand while talking on a cell phone in any town traffic is inherently FAR more dangerous than an accomplished rider riding a sport bike at 70 mph on a deserted road that happens to have a 50 mph limit just because someone just thought it was an appropriate limit to push onto ALL vehicles under ALL circumstances. Those sorts of ridiculous speed limits are EVERYWHERE. Those anti-cell phone laws while driving are not. I think most Americans by referendum would support strict enforcement of a must have a hands free cell phone law if you're gonna talk & drive. I think most Americans would like to can ridiculously low speed limits. Just watch how the majority tends to drive about 10-15 over most published speed limits. There's your vote.

I would even be very much in favor of raising most (not all, like school zones, high density residential, etc.) current speed limits by about 10-25 mph (depending on where, etc.) -- then strictly enforcing them giving no more than about 5 mph over for error or you get stopped.

Anyway, just my opinion, but thanks for listening!!!

Nice post Jet and let me add that I too have had thoughts similiar to yours yet I am a bit more radical. Keep the cops who like to monitor speed in residential areas to protect the kids and arrest the soccer moms' with lead feet. However, once you are on a highway or on a road away from houses, no speed limits should be imposed. We should focus our attention on drunk drivers more than those of us who own vehicles that redline at 15k and know how to handle ourselves. Perhaps a revised test should be available for people who think that they can handle a fast car or bike and once you pass, you can go as fast as you want on certain roads or in certain conditions. Hell, every time I see an empty road in front of me, I tend to want to open it up alot but I did that the other day and paid for it. Who was I harming? Life must be lived at all costs since everyday we get a little closer to oblivion. Going fast is how I celebrate my life so why shouldn't I be allowed to do it?
