Yes, running the engine on full come after it has warned up will cause it to cut out.
When you get your charger, fully charge the battery (24 hours) then take it off charge for 10 minutes or so. Measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the ignition off, it should be an absolute minimum of 12.8v if not your battery needs replacing.
With the meter still in place turn the ignition on, lights off - the voltage should not drop. Try the starter, what's the voltage?
If the bike starts, what's the voltage? It should be over 13v rising to 14.4 over a short period - if not your regulator / rectifier or your alternator is faulty and further checks are needed.
Did more testing after recharging the battery. Battery off the bike, it read 12.97V. Connected it to the bike, dropped to 12.01V.
Bike idled at 3k RPM, gradually climbed to 5k (I adjusted the idle screw again before first ignition). Voltage slowly increased, peaked at 13.47V at 5k RPM. I noticed brief drops to 8-10V (half-second blips). Lowered the choke by 25%, idle speeds started lowering and the bike started dying.
Runs solid at higher RPMs, but issues start at lower RPMs or when the choke is reduced. Waiting on the new battery.
That does not sound like a battery problem, reasonable voltage after charge and low drop on starting (but possibly a wiring problem with the half second drops in voltage and the drop when first connected to the bike) and the alternator / regulator seem ok (nice voltage boost when running).
The problem with the bike dying off choke sounds more carb related than battery - had the bike been standing for long after the crash?
Update: The bike died on me 30 minutes into riding yesterday, the engine started chugging and then died. I thought it was because I was only riding it in first the whole time and revving high rpm's. Tried to ride today and it was running fine for 40 minutes, shifting gears, taking my time...until I dropped it. After the drop, some fluid started leaking, but it stopped once I set the bike upright. I tried to figure out if it was gasoline or oil, but couldn’t be sure. I traced the leak back to the crankcase breather tube and assumed the drop caused it to spill.
When I turned the bike back on, it started running hot, so I shut it off. Now I’m not sure what my next steps should be. Any advice?
Hi mate I see that I am a bit late but still wanted to check in🙃. So If you tipped it over and a little bit of fuel could have gotten into the hose that is definitely possible. This can cause your air fuel mixture to be dirty and improper, which can cause it to overheat. If I was you I would check if my air filter is contaminated and clean out the airbox good. Try it again. And come back here if the problem still appears(keep in mind usually the simplest solutions are the right ones)
