Default Engine noise?

How noisy are these engines supposed to be? I feel like my engine has a ticking noise at around 4k+ under a load. I don't notice it if I'm just revving, but while riding I start to hear it around 4k+ getting loudest around 5.5K. From sitting atop the bike, it seems like its from the upper engine area.

I can equate it to sounding like lifter tick in a car engine. The P.O. put a manual CCT on. Could this be an indication that it needs to be adjusted?

Probably. If it were valve ticking, you'd most likely hear it more often.

OK, any tips from those that have put the manual CCT on, on how to adjust it? I moved the tank, but I can't get on the jam nut for anything! I'm seriously considering getting the "updated" auto CCT and just replacing it!!

Its not the a manual CCT isn't easily adjusted but if you're not a wrencher, the factory CCT is the way to go.

There are some CCT 'tutorial' installs here on the forum. A search should turn them up.

Thanks. I gave up one day, then went at it the next. I finally got it with a stubby 9/16 12pt box wrench, and had to squeeze my hand in under the subframe and over the swingarm, then feed the wrench in from the top down to my hand! lol.

I am a wrencher. Currently employed with the Indiana State Police as the district fleet mechanic. Also worked at two dealerships, and have ASE certifications. I just have virtually no experience with motorcycles, but I figure they pretty much work the same? Luckily I am a small guy (about 5'7" and 140lbs) and have relatively small hands, making working on a small bike a little easier.

Anyway, got the CCT tightened (went about 1 1/2 turns) and still had a noise. Upon restarting it, it dragged a little (i think I over tightened, so I backed it back off another 1/4 - 1/2 turn.). End of story is that I'm pretty sure I got it adjusted correctly, but still have a ticking noise. Guess I'll have to make time over a weekend to check the valve clearance. The P.O. allegedly checked it at the end of the season last year, but I have to verification that it was done/ done correctly. If they are out of spec, does that need to be adjusted at a shop, or can I get shims from somewhere?
