Default Bought 2000 CBR600 F4 with issues

So I seen an add for a 2000 CBR600 F4 with blown head gasket, bike is in good shape has fmf exhaust, jetted etc. Only issue is that it was said to have a blown head gasket, long story short guy said he drove it and it overheated and stalled wouldn’t start since. I paid $500 so not bad even if I have to buy a used engine. So I noticed when trying to start it only hiccuped maybe twice, other than that dead. It was completely out of coolant but none in the oil and you could see what I believe was oil leaking out of the head gasket or could’ve been the excessive gas that wasn’t igniting. So maybe it got hot because it was out of coolant and blew the head gasket from the heat? I wasn’t able to check compression which wouldn’t have been good anyway knowing the head gasket was leaking as bad as it was. I did notice the cylinders are pretty scuffed, has 23,000 on it but it wasn’t something you could really feel or get a nail in. I put a straight edge on head and block and it checked out, it did look like the pistons were pushing up oil but maybe that was the gas residue from not combusting when trying to start. So just trying to see if anyone has any ideas, should I try to change head gasket and check compression afterwards? Or just buy used engine and not mess with it?

I would say to change the head gasket and give it a go unless you can get a guarenteed used engine cheap

Yeah I bought a new head gasket and gonna install this weekend. The only way I see it making sense being the head gasket is there was an external coolant leak and maybe when it did get super hot it blew the gasket. I’m more betting on rings are gone but worth the $63 to try.

Couldn't agree more. you might get lucky. The bores look oily but hopefully that will be as a result of the gasket blowing.

Yeah they were oily so I’m hoping just the gasket, weird thing is the spark plugs weren’t black or nasty like it was burning oil.

Obviously you will need to find out why there was no coolant in the system. It could be a leaking hose somewhere that the previous owner never noticed.
