bike dies when fan turns on?
like the thread says. the bike runs and drives fine it also seems to be holding a charge fine so far. when the rad fan turns on (at idle) the bike boggs down and dies. could this be the battery not putong out enough juice? what do you guys think.
i would think voltage regulator any thing other than that i dont know. Start the bike with a meter on your battery than keep it there until the fan comes on see if the voltage drops when it comes on if it dose i would start with the regulator. the only other possible thing i could think of is the fan motor is bad it self and pulling too much juice but kind of unlikely
the battery holds a charge of 12volts and when running around 14 and ya when the fan kicks in the volts drop to 10 and jump around from 9 to 11 until the fan turns off then everything ins fine.
thanks.
thanks.
Note this is quoting from my haynes manual, I haven't looked on my bike but it says; Remove the seat cowling. The regulator/rectifier is mounted on the right hand side of the rear sub-frame on European F models and US 1999 and 2000 models, and on the right-hand side of the sub-frame on European FS models and US 2001-on models. Hope thats of help to you.
I have the exact same problem... I found out one day ~32C in full leather in rush hour traffic.
The bike heated up so the fan came on. It was fine for the first few lights, but then it started idling really rough. I didn't think it through at the time, but what was happening was it was discharging the battery and didn't have enough power to give a good spark at low idle.
So I let it stall and duck waddled for short moves and bump started it for longer moves.
When I got it home I put it on the battery charger and it has been fine since.
What I would suggest you and I both do - go get the battery load tested at a shop. Many places will do this free as they hope to sell you a new battery. You could also buy a battery tester...
The regulator as mentioned before is on the inside of the tail section - very nice spot to get to and doesn't get heated up like the VFR ones mounted forward.
well i got the battery test and they said it was fine. but wasent the right battery for the bike. the guy before put the wrong battery in, but it did work for 2 years with no problem.so i got a new battery anyway just to see if it would work.......... and no more problems.
