Default stator question

How long do they last? My bike is a 1996. I had a friend that his stator went bad and it was all burnt and fried on a 2000. Can a stator just go bad cause its old? Or does it have to be fried looking to be bad?

I would guess that anything is possible. However, there is nothing magical about the stator that's in our bikes. The stator is nothing more than a coil of wire in which a magnet spins. A wire has essentially no or little resistance. That's why when you measure it's resistance with an ohm meter it reads 0.0 ohm to 1.0 ohm. The only thing that's really going to go bad with it is if the insulation that's on with coil of wire breaks down and shorts to ground, or between the coils. Short (no punn intended) of that, not much goes wrong with them.
