Speedo not working but odometer does?
Hi all
Bike is a 98 Fw and I'm in the UK
I've searched and googled.
People seem to have had the same problem only both the speedo and odometer don't work for them.
My problem seems a bit different in that the speedo has gradually and eventually stopped working
but the odometer still ticks round.
I'm guessing it's 1 of 2 things.
1-Speed convertor(or something named similar?)
2-the clock has packed up
Either way I've just spent most of my money getting her back on the road and I'm hoping the fix is not that expensive.
Any help, clues, ideas, things to try before I take it to the garage would be greatly appreciated.

It could be just crud stopping the needle from moving, it does not take much. On your model its not cble driven but via a sensor. Its fiddly & time consuming, but you can get to the clocks ok, just got to remove a sh*t load to get to them properly (ie fairing etc). I know some guys can get to them without doing all that, but their either midgets or use child labour.
sounds like your going to need a new speedo you can try lubing and cleaning, but i would say its gone, one option is to buy a used unit that is a direct replacement for yours or you can upgrade to the f4i speedometer, i would start watching ebay once you have decide which route you wish to take
i know the problem you are haveing. i am haveing the same problem however my speedo works but my odometer doesn't like to turn to much. it will work every here and there for about maybe 10 or 15 miles and stop. how hard is it to get to the senser? were is it at?
if you have movement of either the speedometer, odometer, or trip meter, then your sensor is working, and you have a bad solder joint on the bread board of the speedometer , or a faulty driver motor in the speedometer or faulty connection through one of the four screws making the connection for the speedometer to work ie screw is loose or has fallen out or faulty wiring
Many thanks for the replys guys.
I've had the clocks out and needle movement seems fine.
Seems like I need a new clock then.
I do have a spare 1 with a broken dial face, wonder if I can swap?
Do I need a special tool to pull the speedo needle out?
I'm also going to ebay
Speedo symptoms were...
Some spiking occured 1st then innacurate reading of speed(it was reading 60 when I know I was doing at least 80).
Then it just stopped.

The pulse generator isin the area of the front sprocket. Left fairing needs to come off and other miscelaneous things to remove it. Should be 3 wires. But I would put money on a poor electrical connection first.
