Default odometer and trip not working

When i got the bike, the seller was honest and told me the cluster didn't work with tach (broken needle after a fall) and the odo didn't work. It has a newer engine in it, and it runs well, so i bought another cluster to fix this, and the odometer still doesn't work.. and neither does the trip one. What controls this? every other gauge and light works. The new cluster i put on was in storage for years, and only has 3999 miles on it

did you trace the wire harness and make sure everything is plugged in correctly to the engine?

The speed sensor is located on top of the rear portion of the engine above the output shaft for the front sprocket. The connector is a 3 pin white connector near the right engine hanger bracket. Try unplugging and replugging this connector. If you've got a meter, you can check for battery voltage on the Green/Black wire to the Black/Brown wires. If you have voltage there, then there is another test you can do on the gauge cluster. Lets start with the simple things first, check the connector. You can see it here above the Thermostat housing.

Get the manual and perform the checks that are in there for the odometer. This way there won't be any guessing.
