I'm not sure about the number of links in the chain, but either of those chains will get you down the road. One question, why not do the 520 conversion and free up a bit of weight?

Ok thank you. I'm still researching the 520 here on the forums to see if it's something I want to do or not. Plus not sure if I have money for the sprockets for 520 yet. Shop said my bike isn't safe with the chain the way it is now

I'd suggest saving your money then. It's always a good idea to swap chains and sprockets at the same time so you get even wear on the hardware.

To go from a 525 to a 520 isn't going to make a significant amount of difference in weight. Steel sprockets aren't that expensive and would be well worth replacing. Putting a new chain on worn sprockets is going to cause excess wear and stress on your new chain (that you just spent a hundred dollars on) because it doesn't fit the old sprocket teeth very well. If you do the 520 conversion, then you're going to be using aluminum sprockets which are more expensive and wear out sooner. If you're concerned about your budget, then stay with the 525X ring and dont' throw good money after bad. This page has a good graphic showing the different profiles of the "O" rings that go around the bushings on each of the chains links. That's all they're really talking about.
