I am changing my chain and sprockets for the first time. After breaking the chain and taking off both sprockets I am now stuck trying to put the front sprocket back on.

I ordered the 15 tooth JT front sprocket (JT Sprockets: Catalogue) which looks like it identically matches the old sprocket (I have a 1997 CBR 600F). However when I try to put it on the bike it won't fit. It seems the ridges on the inside of the new sprocket are slightly too wide. I don't want to try to force it on with too much pressure as the old sprocket slides on and off quite easily.

The only thing I can think is that either I have a dud sprocket from the factory (highly unlikely) or my bike in fact requires a different model. However when searching JT sprockets, for my bike they say I require the JT 1371 which is exactly the part I have.

Currently I am not sure what to do, any ideas?

 

It would appear that perhaps your engine is not the original one fitted to the bike when new? Have you checked the engine serial number against the Honda database t see if it is the correct engine for your model of bike?

That would be my guess, right bike, wrong engine.

So you're right Biker_Neil. After checking the engine number it is from a previous year (1994), whereas the VIN and date of first registration are 1997.

Surprised me a bit, but all numbers match with V5C. In future all engine parts I will need to get for the previous model then.

 

Actually in fact I am now not so sure. I think I was looking at VIN number dates when dating the engine number.

The VIN I am fairly sure is 1997 (I used this site), the engine I am now not sure. Going by this post (https://cbrforum.com/forum/cbr-600f3...numbers-81488/) and assuming chronological order then it would seem to date my engine around 1997 also.

Do you have a link for a better reference for identifying the engine model?

( Sprockets and chain ) ,,, the front sprocket
slid / fit fine . 1996 F3 .

Engine and VIN numbers match 1997 CBR600F-V as I had initially thought. I therefore have no idea why the front sprocket won't fit. As per the link in the initial post the sprocket should fit "Honda CBR600 FV, FW (PC31)".

I suppose best thing to do is contact JT Sprockets. Interestingly there is a different part for 1991 to 1996 (JT Sprockets: Catalogue), although comparing with the part I have for 1997 to 1998 (JT Sprockets: Catalogue) it looks as though the dimensions of the front sprocket on both are exactly the same.

So that's the exact JT Sprockets part I have that doesn't fit. I'll wait for a response from them otherwise I'll order the genuine Honda part and hopefully that will fit.

 

Might of been an Admin problem and they sent you the wrong ones
