I am. Also planning on removing the petcock and gas cap (cause I need to strip paint off it). If you don't remove the cap, definitely mask it off with tape

If I want to remove the tank, do I have to drain the tank or can i take it off without draining it? I checked the service manual and all it says is to turn the petcock to "OFF", disconnect the overflow hoses and lift the tank off. But it doesn't say anything about draining the tank or how to do it.

YES! I forgot to and the difference in temperature caused condensation on part of the tank.

I plan on draining the tank because I need to remove the gas cap (previous owner painted over it). Can't mix paint & gas

I bought a cheap siphon from Pepboys for $8 and siphoned it into a gas can when I needed to check the petcock. Left it in the driveway with a screen over the open gas cap (to keep debris from dropping in) for an hour and I was good.

Besides, you never know when you'll need to siphon a gallon out your gf's car to make it to the gas station
